A short essay on the Gayety Theatre in Montreal. While Montreal is still considered a party city by many, this essay traces the demise of Cabaret and the Red Light District in Montreal. In the first half of the twentieth century, a most popular form of public amusement was Cabaret theatre, featuring Burlesque and Vaudeville entertainment.
A precursor to television, Cabaret was an immensely loved form of public amusement rivaling the popularity of motion pictures, essay society. Not only does the opening of the Gayety Theatre represent the penetration of modern forces into Quebequois society, but the Gayety Theatre would also become an emblem and ultimately a victim of a tenuous period in Quebec history.
The rise and fall of the Gayety Theatre is also a symbol of the conflict between an urban, modern lifestyle originating out of profound changes brought on by industrialization and traditional values and morality. Ultimately and ironically the Gayety Theatre not only fell essay society to forces of traditional morality but to forces of ever-evolving modernity as well. The theatre began as a Vaudeville venue and would later be reincarnated briefly as a movie theatre and then as a more risqué Burlesque attraction only to close in On August 27,essay society, a day after the opening of the Gayety theatre, the Gazette featured an article on page three describing the events of the opening.
Hosting two showings of its first act, the Bowery Burlesquers, the event attracted crowds of hundreds of people. While people were turned away from the sold out shows, many in the crowd of hundred had simply come out to see the completed building rather than attend the show.
Indeed the structure was a feat of modernity. The theatre had been built and was owned by Canadian Theatres ltd. Ultimately, the Gayety Theatre fell victim to these tensions, closing in the fifties, a result of the inquest pursued by the CMP.
Just as modernity in the form of public entertainment, like the Cabarets of the red light district had once uprooted traditional social patterns in Quebec, the Gayety itself, fell victim to this pattern of modern innovation. The cabaret scene was becoming less and less popular. Television had become available to the public and this became the new modern preferred form of entertainment.
